An interest in the ancient, elemental history of metals is woven throughout Catherine Hartley’s practice as a goldsmith. Through simple but strong forms, the rich colours and textures of metals are drawn out and highlighted in her work. Their unique properties inform her designs, and she often joins various alloys so that the contrast between them creates a relationship that amplifies each. Seeing jewellery as a vessel for narrative and memory, her work echoes the cosmic origins of metals, and speaks of natural forces and forms, such as the warmth of the sun or the movement of water.
